Stewardship in a data governance program is a fundamental concept aimed at ensuring the effective and responsible management of data within an organization. By establishing stewardship, a set of key roles is defined that are necessary to carry out this task. In this blog post, we explore and explain the meaning of the most common roles that should be defined when establishing stewardship in a data governance program.

The first crucial role is that of the Data Steward, or data manager. This person is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the quality and integrity of data, as well as defining policies and standards for its use. The Data Steward plays a fundamental role in supervising data acquisition, storage, and management processes.

Another important role is the Data Owner, or data owner. This individual is responsible for defining and maintaining policies for data access and usage. The Data Owner makes decisions about who has access to data and how it is used, and is also responsible for ensuring its security and protection.

The Data Custodian, or data custodian, is another essential role in stewardship. This person is responsible for the practical administration of data, including its storage, backup, and recovery. The Data Custodian works closely with the Data Steward to ensure data availability and integrity.

Last but not least, we find the role of the Data User, or data user. This individual uses data to carry out their tasks and makes decisions based on the information provided. It is essential that Data Users understand and follow the policies and standards established by the other roles to ensure the proper use of data.

Establishing clear and well-defined roles in a data governance program is essential to ensuring effective and responsible data management. The roles of Data Steward, Data Owner, Data Custodian, and Data User play fundamental functions in this process and work closely together to ensure the quality, availability, and protection of data within an organization.
